Pattaya: A British driver’s sedan overturned and caught fire after striking another car driven by a Thai man, leaving two people injured, at a South Pattaya traffic-light intersection early on October 26th, with witnesses telling rescuers the foreigner had allegedly run the red light.
The Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Pattaya rescue radio centre received the report at 2:06 a.m. of a collision and rollover at the South Pattaya intersection on the Bangkok-bound side in Nongprue. Rescue volunteers and Pattaya City Police officers responded.
At the scene, a bronze MG sedan with Rayong plates lay on its side, extensively damaged, with sparks and flames appearing. The driver, Mr. Charlie, 36, a British national, was trapped but uninjured. His foreign passenger, whose name and nationality were not immediately known, suffered abrasions and chest tightness. The other vehicle, a bronze Honda Civic registered in Chiang Mai, had been pushed more than 30 metres and was also heavily damaged. Its driver, Mr. Warut, 38, sustained a broken right arm and a wound to his right eye.
Rescuers gave first aid to both injured people and took them to hospital. Witnesses said the MG was travelling from the Sattahip direction toward Bangkok and accelerated through the red light as the Civic crossed the junction toward South Pattaya Road, resulting in the impact. The MG then rolled and began to burn. Bystanders quickly extinguished the flames and helped extract Charlie safely from the wreckage.
Pol. Sub-Lt. Kachen Phuthadonga, a deputy investigation inspector at Pattaya City Police Station, documented the scene. Officers said they would review CCTV footage from the junction to determine the precise sequence of events and complete the investigation.
A separate incident at a North Pattaya red light on October 19 involved a driver who struck a line of nearly 10 stopped vehicles after reportedly falling asleep at the wheel; an alcohol test later returned zero.
