Nearly 5,000 U.S. Navy personnel will enjoy free reign to explore Phuket during a port visit by the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) and its escort, the destroyer USS Delbert D. Black (DDG-119), from October 4 to 9, 2026.

Now for the update:

On the morning of October 2nd, 2026, Phuket Governor Chotinrin Koedsom welcomed Lou Pham, Deputy Assistant Attaché for Force Protection at the US Embassy in Thailand, along with his team at the governor’s reception room on the fourth floor of Phuket Provincial Hall. The meeting focused on security arrangements and logistical support for personnel from the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush and its escort ship USS Mason.

The vessels are scheduled to anchor in Makham Bay, approximately 1.6 nautical miles offshore, from 4 to 9 October 2026 to allow crew members time ashore for rest and recreation. Representatives from the Third Naval Area Command, Phuket Provincial Police, local administrative agencies, the Phuket Provincial Office, the Regional Marine Department’s Phuket branch, the Sports Authority of Thailand in Phuket, the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization, the temporary passport office, and other relevant bodies joined the discussions.

Governor Chotinrin said the province places high priority on maintaining public order and safety for both residents and visitors. Authorities will operate under a single-command structure to ensure efficient coordination and have established a 24-hour operations center to monitor the situation throughout the visit. Security will be supported by the “Phuket Eye” network, an AI-enabled CCTV system covering key areas across the island, to help detect and respond to potential incidents. Dedicated liaison officers will also facilitate cooperation among agencies during the sailors’ stay.

The governor spoke to the importance of US personnel adhering to Thai laws, regulations, and cultural norms. He noted that Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist country with traditions closely tied to the religion, and asked that visiting service members conduct themselves appropriately while enjoying the island.

Lou Pham expressed appreciation for Phuket’s hospitality and preparations. He explained that the Force Protection Detachment is responsible for the safety of US personnel operating in Thailand and places strong emphasis on ensuring that sailors behave respectfully and follow local rules. The US side welcomed the opportunity to visit Phuket, describing it as a popular and scenic destination, and praised the province’s integrated approach. Officials on both sides expressed hope that the visit will further strengthen Thailand–US ties in economic, tourism, and cultural areas.

Phuket authorities say they are ready to welcome the sailors with genuine hospitality while ensuring the visit proceeds smoothly within the framework of Thai law.
