PATTAYA: A 33-year-old German tourist was seriously injured after falling backward from a second-floor hotel balcony early Thursday morning while smoking and leaning on a rail. It is believed to be an accident, say local officials.

Police Lt. Sakayaphat Chaidej, deputy investigating officer at Pattaya City Police Station, received a report at 3:19 a.m. on October 1st that a person had fallen from a height at a hotel in Soi Phratmnak 2. Rescue teams from Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Pattaya were dispatched to the scene.

Officers found Mr. Hohmann, German, lying on the ground below the hotel with severe injuries, including a deep head wound. Rescuers provided first aid before rushing him to Pattaya Patamakun Hospital.

A pool of blood, broken tree branches and the man’s shoes were found at the scene.

An unidentified friend who was present told police that Hohmann had been standing on the second-floor balcony of their room smoking a cigarette, leaning his back against the balcony railing, before he suddenly fell backward.

Hotel receptionist Mrs. Daeng, 52, said Hohmann was staying in a second-floor room with a German friend. The friend ran downstairs to report that his companion had fallen from the second floor, and she immediately called for help.

Police and investigators inspected the room in question. They found no signs of a struggle or other unusual activity inside the room, only broken glass fragments, cannabis, and smoking equipment.

Police are continuing to examine the incident, interview the injured man’s friend and question other witnesses to determine the exact cause of the fall.
