People are being advised to avoid swimming at Hua Hin beach as strong winds and waves bring marine debris ashore and may create swirling currents.
Hua Hin Municipality issued the advice as municipal staff and community volunteers carried out a beach clean-up on Wednesday, 21 October.
Deputy Mayor Pailin Kongphan led the operation on behalf of the mayor, joined by municipal representatives, engineering staff and teams from the Social Welfare Division and Public Health and Environment Division.
The municipality said the accumulation of debris is associated with the monsoon season and the annual “kite wind” period, which occurs during October and November.
North-easterly monsoon winds and ocean currents carry driftwood, vegetation and other debris towards the coast. Rubbish swept from land into the sea during flooding can also be washed onto beaches.
Daily clean-ups on Hua Hin beach
Municipal staff monitor sea levels and tidal conditions each day to identify areas they can safely access to collect debris.
Teams clean the beach daily and collect rubbish that hotels, businesses and households have gathered in black bags.
The municipality also urged people to stay out of the sea during the current conditions.
“For your safety, please avoid swimming in the sea during this period,” it advised.
