Crackdown: Thai Immigration on the hunt for 10,000+ visa overstayers

ที่มา: Hua Hin Today

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has ordered a nationwide search for foreigners believed to have overstayed their permitted period, following the arrest of 10 suspects in Bangkok.

The figure of more than 10,000 has attracted widespread attention, but it does not mean that 10,000 people have been arrested in a single operation.

Ten people arrested in Bangkok case

Immigration officers working with South Korean police arrested eight South Korean nationals and two Chinese nationals during raids at three Bangkok locations on 19 October.

According to reports by The Nation and The Star, the investigation concerned an alleged scam network targeting victims in South Korea.

Police said the investigation began after a South Korean national was arrested on 4 September for overstaying. The wider investigation allegedly led officers to properties in Bangkok where suspects were operating.

The Immigration Bureau revoked the visas of all 10 suspects while investigators continued gathering evidence.

What does “10,000+ overstayers” mean?

The 10,000-plus figure is an enforcement estimate cited by Immigration Bureau commissioner Pol Lt Gen Nopasin Poolsawat.

It appears to describe the broader number of foreign visitors authorities believe may be overstaying in Thailand. It is not confirmation that more than 10,000 people have already been arrested, detained or deported during this particular crackdown.

No public nationwide breakdown has been released showing how the estimate is divided between provinces, nationalities or individual cases.

The Immigration Bureau headquarters has confirmed to Next Step Hua Hin that the crackdown is continuing nationwide. Next Step Hua Hin reports will continue tracking confirmed developments.

That means immigration checks could continue in Bangkok, tourist destinations and provincial areas, including locations popular with foreign residents such as Hua Hin and Cha-am. However, the available reports do not identify a specific Hua Hin operation connected to this case.

Thailand has already reported broader enforcement figures

The latest warning follows a wider campaign against immigration violations, illegal work and suspected transnational crime.

Thailand’s Government Public Relations Department reported in June that 14,161 overstayers and illegal workers had been arrested and processed for deportation. The same announcement also referred to visa cancellations, immigration screening and raids on high-risk areas.

That figure covers a broader campaign and a different reporting period. It should not be added to the separate 10,000-plus estimate linked to the October crackdown.

What should foreigners do if their visa has expired?

Anyone who may have overstayed should check the permitted-stay date in their passport and confirm their immigration status as soon as possible.

Thailand’s official guidance states that the normal overstay fine is 500 baht per day, up to a maximum of 20,000 baht. Longer overstays can carry more serious consequences, including detention, deportation and re-entry bans. Thailand’s official guidance also distinguishes between people who surrender themselves and those arrested for overstay.

Foreigners should avoid relying on social-media advice or assuming that every case can be resolved in the same way. Before reporting to Immigration, paying a fine or leaving Thailand, it is sensible to seek qualified legal or immigration advice based on the individual passport record and permitted-stay history.

The key takeaway

Ten people have been arrested in the Bangkok investigation that triggered the latest warning.

The 10,000-plus figure is a reported estimate of the wider group immigration authorities want to identify and process. It is not proof that 10,000 arrests have taken place.

Foreign residents and visitors in Hua Hin should check their permitted-stay dates now and deal with any uncertainty before it becomes an enforcement problem.
